A study conducted by the National Research Center for the Working Environment shows that Denmark’s sickness absence costs around DKK 46 billion. After this, all the indirect costs such as production losses, workers’ salaries and not least lost customers and orders must be included. It is, so to speak, not an option to downgrade the working environment if the company is to be productive, competitive and attractive to employees. Despite the high costs, there is still a tendency for more and more companies to still opt out of putting health and well-being on the agenda.

Among other things, it got COWI to initiate an experiment consisting of 11 projects in order to investigate how many of these were profitable. The survey showed that 4 out of the 11 companies were not profitable because, instead, they prioritized working with other goals such as collaboration and reputation. The conclusion of the project was that the companies that prioritized a healthy work environment received twice as much in return as they invest when they focus on work environment efforts. A shared responsibility

As an employer, it is your responsibility to have the necessary control and supervision so that your employees do not suffer work-related injuries or illnesses. But most people probably know the term – it takes two to Danish tango. Both employer and employees have a responsibility when it comes to safety and health in the workplace. The employer must set the framework and introduce preventive measures that can promote a healthy work culture, but it is the employees’ task to assist the employer in this, which is why they are dependent on each other’s input and experience.
